Stony Brook Athletics Welcomes Dr. Danielle Merolla as Inaugural Director of Athletics Mental Health Services

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook Athletics is proud to welcome Dr. Danielle Merolla as the department’s inaugural Director of Athletics Mental Health Services at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), effective November 28, a shared role between CAPS and Athletics.
“There is not a higher priority in our department than the mental health and wellbeing of our student-athletes. The addition of Danielle to our team demonstrates that commitment and further allows us to provide the highest level of support for our student-athletes who need it,” said Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron.
In her role as Director of Athletics Mental Health Services, Dr. Merolla will be responsible for working directly with the sports medicine department and Stony Brook’s student-athletes, providing psychological assessments, psychotherapy, and counseling in collaboration with CAPS. She will promote overall health and wellness of the student-athlete population, and the capacity to thrive, both in and out of their sport.
She will assist the sports medicine department with creating and implementing training and education programs for the Athletics department and student-athletes. Dr. Merolla will help with developing mental health policies and procedures within Athletics and organizing and supporting department mental health support groups and events.
“Adding Dr. Danielle Merolla as the inaugural Director of Athletics Mental Health Services elevates the mental health care of our student-athletes to the next level. It gives a consistent person to help develop a mental health program instead of just taking care of immediate needs. Dr. Merolla will be a great addition to work with our sports psychologist and sports medicine department to address all mental health needs and create the best environment for the student-athletes to be successful in and out of their sport. I look forward to working with her and adding even more programming and resources to the department in mental health!” said Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Elizabeth Zanolli.
Dr. Merolla originally joined Stony Brook as the Assistant Director of Outreach and Community Based Interventions at CAPS in 2017. She was then appointed Associate Director for the Center for Prevention and Outreach in 2018 where she lent leadership and direction in the development, coordination, and implementation of various mental health and suicide prevention initiatives that had a considerable impact on the Stony Brook campus community.
She has spearheaded initiatives on campus such as the Walk of Hope, Let’s Talk, Question, Persuade and Refer (QPR) etc. Dr. Merolla has also provided several trainings and consultations to various Academic and Student Affairs partners and forged strong connections with them.
