Courteney said: “Signing up to take part in the WorldSkills UK competition was one of the smartest things I have ever done. I didn’t expect to make it past the first round and every time I progressed I got more nervous but also excited.

“It wasn’t easy and you do have to put in loads of free time into training, but the other competitors were all great and I learnt so much from everyone involved. I would absolutely recommend that people sign up this year.”

WorldSkills is a global movement made up of 80 countries which supports young people through competitions-based training.

The competition takes place every two years, and sees national teams testing their ability to achieve world-class standards in what is described as the “skills olympics”.

WorldSkills UK Deputy CEO Ben Blackledge told Grimsby Live: “Courteney is a real inspiration. To have excelled after such a difficult year is a testament to her drive and determination. In a competitive field, Courteney demonstrated she had the skills needed to pick up the top prize.

“We are really pleased she got so much from the whole experience and that she is now urging other young people to take up the challenge of a WorldSkills UK national competition. We look forward to seeing what Courteney is going to do next.”
